Skylarks and Swallows at Farthingloe

Skylarks and Swallows at Farthingloe

Location: Great Farthingloe Farm

Date: 21st June 2023

Blog Written by: Gini (Walk Leader)

We had a lovely wheeled adventure around Great Farthingloe Farm today. WIld with Wheels Founder Gini, introduced this gem of a location to the group, and explained the story behind how Farthingloe Farm was key to the initiation of getting Wild with Wheels up and running and securing funding.

We followed the original Folkestone Road and spied the sea mist rolling in across the North Downs Way and over Shakespeares Cliff.

It was so interesting to observe the changes in the season, and each time we visit, there are new plants, blooms, seeds or fruit to spot.

The Sklylarks didn't disappoint and one hovered so close that we could see the detail in its face and wings. But no one was on hand to capture the moment on camera. We watched the flutterings, and listened to the birdsong.

Although we have wildlife ID charts and books we used some technology on phone apps to tell us about the native wildflowers and which birds we could hear in the distance. Which included Swallows, Cliff Chaff and Whitethroat.

So much wildlife flew by us at speed, most we couldn't identify. Amongst the butterflies we spotted the bright red Cinnabar Moth, Red Admiral and Marbled White.

We took a slow stroll to allow time to connect to the natural surroundings and for our group to take photos.

When we reached the cycle path adjacent to the North Downs Way, a cyclist stopped and asked if we were the group who were at the Warren, he'd seen on the TV. We were so pleased that Wild with Wheels had etched in people's minds. We stopped and chatted about accessibility, along with his role with Dover Lifeboats.

It was a delightful session, followed by lunch at Little Farthingloe Farm across the main road.

Our next GOGA walk here, will be next month, if you would like to join us... do get in touch or look us up on Eventbrite to book.
